Baseball Can't Hold On Against Scranton
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team dropped a 13-6 final to the University of Scranton on Monday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Classic.
Mitchell (1-4 overall) led 5-1 midway through the nine-inning affair but allowed 12 runs over the final four frames. Scranton starter Luke Sheehan pitched 8.0 innings and struck out four to earn the win. Freshman Justin Lemanski lasted 5.1 innings on the hill for the Mariners and gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out six.
The Mariners scored the game's first runs in the third inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, freshman Drew Doyle delivered a double to drive in three runs. He later scored on a fielding error to give Mitchell a 4-0 cushion.
After Scranton put up its first run in the top of the fourth, Mitchell answered right back in the home half. Freshman Gavin LaLima (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) came through with a two-out double and then scored on a single by senior Tommy Derosier. Derosier has now hit safely and driven in a run in all four games he's played in this season.
Scranton (6-4 overall) cut the deficit to 5-4 with a three-run sixth inning and scored two more runs in the seventh to take over the lead. The Royals then hit up the Mitchell bullpen for three runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth to finish the contest. The Mariners' final run in the eighth came on an RBI single by freshman Evan Peck that scored junior Will Charkowsky, who finished with a team-high three hits.
Mitchell returns to action at the Cusic Classic against Gettysburg College on Tuesday, March 13 at 10 a.m.
