Gettysburg Tops Baseball at Cusic Classic
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team suffered a 14-2 setback to Gettysburg College on Tuesday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Classic.
Mitchell (1-5 overall) fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning but answered back with a run in the home half, with freshman Drew Doyle scoring on a ground ball by Rafael Garcia. The Mariners stranded a runner on second base in the frame, the first of 11 runners left on base on the day.
The Bullets scored two more runs in the second and never looked back, extending the margin to 8-1 before Mitchell scratched across another run in the fifth. With senior Tommy Derosier standing at third base, freshman Nick Carlson delivered a two-out base hit to pick up his fifth RBI of the season.
Gettysburg scored six more runs over the final three innings to cement the victory. Starting pitcher Drew Felsenthal picked up the win by throwing 7.0 strong innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits.
Freshman Mike Grofsick also went 7.0 innings on the mound for the Mariners, giving up 11 runs (nine earned) on 16 hits. Both Derosier and junior Will Charkowsky finished with two hits each.
Mitchell will wrap up play at the Cusic Classic on Wednesday, March 14 against Kenyon at 10 a.m. and Salem State at 1 p.m.
