Baseball Falls 6-4 to Rockford
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Mitchell College baseball team fell 6-4 to Rockford College on Sunday at the Gene Cusic Classic.
Mitchell (1-3 overall) trailed 6-2 heading into its final turn at the plate and rallied for two runs in the ninth. Sophomore Gavin LaLima delivered a two-out, two-run single to center to cut the deficit in half and bring the tying run to the plate. However, Rockford's Joe Rigg earned his first save of the season by ending the game with a strikeout.
Sophomore Drew Doyle had a pair of hits and drove in a run in the seventh to lead the Mariners. Freshman Neftali Arroyo plated a run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth and also doubled in the game.
Freshman Josh Zurita got the starting nod for Mitchell and lasted 8.0 innings. He allowed four runs on 10 hits and struck out three while walking two.
Mitchell will take a day off before playing a doubleheader against Defiance College on Tuesday, March 12 beginning at 10 a.m.
