Baseball Falls 9-3 to Johnson & Wales
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team dropped a 9-3 final to Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play at Alumni Field.
Starting pitcher John Amodeo turned in a strong outing for the Wildcats (10-4 overall), striking out eight and allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits in a complete game performance. His teammates also gave him plenty of run support, led by a 3-for-4 effort at the plate by Zach Boyes.
Mitchell (7-7 overall) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning thanks to the base running of freshman Neftali Arroyo, who reached base on an error before stealing second and third. He then made a break for home while lefty Gavin LaLima was at the plate and was called safe after a collision with catcher Tyler Newell.
The Wildcats took the lead in the fourth on a two-run homer to right by Jake Dickerson. JWU added three runs in each of the next two innings to take a commanding 8-1 lead. Jack Hocking had a two-run single in the fifth that was followed by an RBI single by Dickerson, and Boyes added a two-run single in the sixth.
Mitchell picked up a pair of runs in the seventh after loading the bases with only one out, but it wasn't nearly enough. Amodeo (2-0 overall) put runners on base in the final two frames, but a pair of double plays kept the Mariners off the scoreboard.
Mitchell will next host Becker College for a doubleheader on Friday, March 29 at 1 p.m. Johnson & Wales returns to action at Mass Maritime on Thursday, March 28 at 3:30 p.m.
