Baseball Drops Series Finale at DWC
NASHUA, N.H. – Mitchell College dropped the rubber match of its weekend baseball series with Daniel Webster College on Sunday afternoon by an 8-3 final at Harvey Woods Field.
Daniel Webster's Syed Ali turned in a strong performance on the mound, tossing his first complete game victory since missing virtually his entire previous season to a shoulder injury. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits over 9.0 innings to give the Eagles a pivotal NECC victory.
Ali improved to 3-0 on the year, striking out a career-high eight and walking just one as the Eagles (11-6, 6-2 NECC) took two of three in their weekend series and moved to within a half game of tying the league-leading Mariners (11-10, 7-2 NECC) for first place. The teams had split a doubleheader on Saturday in New London, Conn.
Kyle Brigham went 2-for-4 for the hosts, knocking in three runs while Devin DeCarteret added a two-run single. Rich Lizotte and Joe Morin drove in single runs and Darrik Marstaller chipped in with a pair of hits.
Junior Kenneth Olszewski and freshman Dalton Campbell drove in single runs for Mitchell. Sophomore Gavin LaLima added a hit and scored twice from the leadoff spot. Junior Mike Tandy took the loss (3-3) on the hill, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits while striking out five and walking one.
Mitchell forged ahead in the top of the first with an unearned run from LaLima who reached on an error, but DWC tied it in the fourth as Marstaller singled to lead off and Brigham tripled.
Two Mitchell errors helped the Eagles plate four in the fifth to take control with the big blow coming off a two-out, two-run single from Brigham.
An Olszewski RBI single in the sixth and Campbell's RBI single in the seventh shaved it to a 5-3 game, but DWC answered with three runs on four hits in the eighth including DeCarteret's two-run single to ice it.
Mitchell will next host Elms College on Saturday, April 13 at noon.
