Baseball Picks Up Win at JWU
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales baseball team suffered a 9-4 setback against Mitchell College in a non-conference game at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics complex on Thursday afternoon.
Mitchell got on the board first when junior Evan Peck hit a one-out single and later came around to score on a JWU miscue. Johnson & Wales knotted the game in the bottom of the third as Jack Hocking led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lou Umberto to make the score 1-1.
Johnson & Wales erupted for three runs in the bottom of the fourth, including a RBI triple by Tom Elkow, a RBI single by Jack Hocking and a RBI single by Brandon Cesino for the 4-1 advantage.
Mitchell chipped away at the lead in the top of the sixth when a run-scoring single by senior Kenneth Olszewski made the score 4-2. The visitors then tied the game at 4-4 on a two-run double by junior Ryan Goodwin. Mitchell then took its first lead at 5-4 when Peck was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a wild pitch.
The Mariners extended their lead in the top of the seventh by plating four more runs. Peck capped the frame with a two-run double to make the score 9-4.
Freshman Axel De Jesus picked up his first career win for Mitchell, allowing four runs, two of them earned, on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work. Nick Cesino suffered the loss in relief for JWU, allowing five runs (two earned) on three hits in 1.0 inning.
Peck went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI for Mitchell while Goodwin went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the win. Hocking and Brandon Cesino each had two hits in the setback for JWU.
With the loss the Wildcats fell to 13-3 on the year while Mitchell improved to 7-6-1.
Mitchell continues non-conference play this weekend with doubleheaders against Wesleyan University on Saturday and Utica College on Sunday. First pitched is slated for 12 p.m. each day.
