Baseball Lands Five on NECC All-Conference Teams
ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Five members of the Mitchell College baseball team were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday as the league announced its annual awards and all-conference teams.
Sophomore pitcher Tyler Shamas was a repeat selection as NECC Pitcher of the Year and was one of four Mariners named to the all-conference first team. Joining him on the first team were outfielders Neftali Arroyo and Kenneth Olszewski and senior shortstop Marc Dorsi. Freshman pitcher Axel De Jesus was also an all-conference honorable mention selection. All honors were determined by a vote of the conference's head coaches.
Shamas, who went the distance in all of his conference starts, posted a 6-0 record in NECC play and was the only pitcher to record a win against every team in the league. The sophomore held opponents to a .184 batting average while leading the conference in strikeouts (36), ERA (1.07) and complete games (6) in NECC action.
Arroyo landed on the all-conference first team for a second consecutive season. The sophomore right fielder batted .333 in 17 conference starts and ranked second in the NECC with 20 runs scored. He also hit two home runs and finished with a total of 11 RBI.
Olszewski earned all-conference honors for the first time in his career. The senior left fielder started all 18 NECC games and led the Mariners with a .383 batting average in league play while driving in a team-high 14 runs.
Dorsi, an all-conference second team pick a year ago, started all 18 NECC games and batted .339 with 12 RBI and 17 runs scored. He also tied for the NECC lead with 10 stolen bases in 12 attempts.
De Jesus made nine conference appearances and went 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA. He also tied for the league lead with three saves and struck out 16 batters in 19.2 innings of work.
Mitchell (23-12-1 overall, 12-6 NECC) tied for first place in the NECC regular season standings and went on to win its third NECC Championship title. The Mariners also earned the program's second trip to the NCAA Championship.
