Baseball Completes Sweep of Newbury Behind De Jesus Gem

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team completed a series sweep of Newbury College on Saturday morning, picking up an 11-0 victory in the finale of the three-game New England Collegiate Conference set at the Cusic Classic.
Axel De Jesus was impressive in his first start of the season, striking out nine batters in a complete game shutout. He allowed only six hits over 9.0 innings and didn't issue a walk.
The Mariners gave De Jesus plenty of run support, scoring 10 runs or more for the third time in four games. Ryan Goodwin continued with a hot bat and went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI. Neftali Arroyo also doubled and knocked in a pair of runs while Kenneth Olszewski finished with three hits and scored three runs.
Mitchell put up three runs in the bottom of the first inning as Olszewski and Evan Peck started the rally with back-to-back two-out singles. After Arroyo drew a walk to load the bases and a wild pitch plated Olszewski, Goodwin followed with a two-run double to make it 3-0 in favor of the Mariners.
Newbury threatened in the second inning by putting runners on second and third base with only one out. De Jesus worked out of the jam, fielding a comebacker at the mound and catching the runner at third in a rundown. The Mariners eventually cut him down at the plate for the second out, and Goodwin fired to Peter McTernan to punch out the trail runner and end the frame.
Mitchell added a pair of runs in both the fifth and seventh innings on two-run doubles by Arroyo and Tyler Pina, respectively. The Mariners then put up four insurance runs in the eighth as Tristan Hurley and Rafael Garcia each knocked in runs and Goodwin capped his day with a two-run single.
All nine Mitchell starters recorded a hit while five players finished with a double. The Mariners scored eight of their 11 runs with two outs.
Mitchell improved to 4-0 on the season and 3-0 in NECC play. The Mariners outscored the Nighthawks 28-5 in the series and saw their three starters toss 21.0 combined innings without giving up an earned run.
Mitchell will next play Salve Regina University on Sunday, March 8 at the Cusic Classic. First pitch is slated for 9 a.m.
