Baseball Splits Key NECC Doubleheader with Daniel Webster
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College baseball team split a key NECC doubleheader with Daniel Webster College this afternoon. Mitchell fell in a close one in game one, 1-0, and then bounced back to score 12 runs in game two and win 12-8.
Game one was a battle of the pitchers, as Andrew Langlais (Ledyard, Conn.) threw for the Mariners and Kory Kiro (Goffstown, N.H.) was on the mound for the Eagles. The game was tied 0-0 in the top of the sixth inning, when Rob Leary (Litchfield, N.H.) hit a solo homer to break the tie and go ahead. Kiro held the Mariners scoreless for the next two innings and clinched the victory. He pitched seven innings and only yielded four hits and three walks while striking out eight. Langlais went the distance and gave up five hits and one run while fanning seven.
The Eagles jumped ahead in game two in the top of the first inning on another homerun by Leary, this one a two-run shot. The Mariners would come right back in the bottom of the first inning and score six runs on a two-run homer by Jeff Perillo (Newington, Conn.) and three consecutive doubles by John McGarry (Waterford, Conn.), Jared Bishop (Moodus, Conn.), and Langlais.
Mitchell would increase their lead to 9-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Langlais hit another double, and Matt Radke (Terryville, Conn.) and Joseph Ramon (Converse, Tex.) both hit RBI singles.
Clayton Boegler (Somerset, Mass.) had a fantastic day at the plate, going 4-for-4 in game two with four runs, a triple, and one RBI. Langlais was also perfect going 2-for-2 with two runs, two doubles, and an RBI. Adam Deltgen pitched a strong game and picked up the victory, as he went all seven innings and gave up eight hits, seven earned runs, and struck out nine batters.
For Daniel Webster, Leary was 3-for-4 with two homers and five RBI, while teammate Joe Tamulonis (Woodstock, N.H.) went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Mitchell is now 8-18 overall and 3-5 in NECC play, and they close out regular-season NECC play on Saturday, April 25 when they host Newbury College at noon for a doubleheader.
