Baseball Takes Two From Newbury
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College baseball team swept Newbury College this afternoon in a NECC doubleheader by the scores 5-4 and 12-5. Jared Bishop (Moodus, Conn.) hit a game-winning single in game one, and game two was an offensive explosion for the Mariners.
Game one was battle, as Mitchell scored first in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Jeff Perillo (Newington, Conn.). The Nighthawks would come right back and tie the game at one in the top of the second inning on an RBI double by Brian Fish (East Brookfield, Mass.). The Mariners would go up 3-1 in the bottom of the second, when Joseph Ramon (Converse, Tex.) hit a sacrifice fly to score a run and Ethan Graynor (Leonia, N.J.) followed up with an RBI single.
Starting pitcher Jeremy Chapman (Waterford, Conn.) pitched out of a bases-loaded, no out jam in the top of the fourth inning, when he struck out the side. Newbury tied the game in the top of the seventh inning at four on a two run homerun by Billy Maddock (Marshfield, Mass.). The Nighthawks threatened to score more runs in the inning, but Matthew Osgood (Brookfield, Conn.) came in to relieve Chapman and got the third out in the inning. The bottom of the seventh started with a single by Graynor, and then Perillo followed up with another single. Bishop then hit a game winning, RBI single to break the tie and give the Mariners the victory.
Chapman pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up seven hits, four earned runs and struck out 11 batters.
Maddock had a big day at the plate for Newbury, as he went 2-for-3 with two runs, three RBI, and two homers. For Mitchell, Paul Martinez (New London, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with two runs, and leftfielder Graynor was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Clayton Boegler (Somerset, Mass.) continued his hot streak at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double.
Game two was an offensive explosion for the Mariners, as they scored 12 runs on nine hits, including a three run homer by Graynor. Mitchell jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first, when they took advantage of three consecutive walks, a passed ball, and a wild pitch. John McGarry (Waterford, Conn.) also hit a two-RBI single in the inning. Mitchell would go on to score six more runs in the third inning and would limit the Nighthawks to only five runs.
Martinez pitched five innings and gave up four runs on five hits, and Osgood finished the game and yielded one run on one hit in two innings of work.
The wins bring Mitchell's record to 10-18 overall and 5-5 in NECC play, and they close out the regular season on Wednesday, April 29th when they play Coast Guard Academy at Dodd Stadium at 2:30 pm.
