Baseball Splits at Becker
WORCESTER, Mass.- The Mitchell College baseball team split a
conference doubleheader against Becker College on Saturday
afternoon, winning the first game 5-0 before falling 13-2 in the
nightcap.
The two teams will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday at
Mitchell College. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
Game 1 - Mitchell 5, Becker 0
The Mariners (12-11 overall, 7-4 NECC) received a complete game
two-hitter from senior Jeremy
Chapman, his third shutout of the season. He also struck out 11
and walked two over the seven innings to improve to 5-0
overall.
The Mariners got all the runs they needed in the top of the first
inning when sophomore Ethan
Graynor hit a two-run home run to deep
right-centerfield. Mitchell put the game out of reach in
the top of the fourth when it plated two more runs. Freshman
Michael Berthiaume earned a bases-loaded walk to
make the score 3-0, and sophomore Tommy Derosier later
hit a sacrifice fly to left to make it a four-run game.
Errick Maddern took the loss for the Hawks. He threw a complete
game and allowed four earned runs on nine hits.
Game 2 - Becker 13, Mitchell 2
Becker (10-14 overall, 6-5 NECC) pounded out 13 hits to
salvage a split on the day. Keith Kandel carried the Hawks
with three hits, three runs scored and three RBI. Todd
Tompkins chipped in with two hits and three RBI. In the bottom
of the sixth inning, Kyle Beede hit his first collegiate home run
over the right-centerfield fence. Joe Franchi improved to 4-2 on
the season after pitching seven strong innings, allowing two runs
on seven hits.
With the loss freshman Garrett
Cornwell fell to 3-2 on the season. He threw 6.0 innings and
gave up 13 runs (nine earned) while recording three strikeouts and
four walks.
