Collado Honored with the Michael T. Jenkins Award
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College sophomore Osmer Collado was recently named the 2011 recipient of the Michael T. Jenkins, Jr. Award.
The award is given annually to a member of the Mitchell College baseball team who overcomes adversity or displays a love for the game. It was created to honor the memory of Jenkins, a former Mitchell baseball player who was killed in a car crash involving a drunk driver in the summer of 1995.
Collado played in all 28 games and made 26 starts at both third base and in the outfield this season. He batted .303 with 25 RBI and 20 runs scored during the regular season and raised his average to .355 in conference play. He also helped the Mariners to a first-place finish in the NECC standings for the first time in school history.
Mitchell will host the 2011 NECC Baseball Championship on May 6-8. The top-seeded Mariners will take on Southern Vermont College on Friday at 11 a.m. The winner of the double-elimination tournament will receive the conference's first-ever NCAA bid.
