Baseball Completes Sweep of Nichols
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team stormed back from an early six-run deficit to post an 18-9 victory over Nichols College on Sunday, completing the weekend sweep.
John-John Jose went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and five RBI to lead the Mitchell offense. Jeremy Sagun also had four hits and knocked in four runs as the Mariners improved to 5-1 overall.
Camren Varney tossed 4.1 innings of relief to earn the win, allowing one unearned run on one hit. Sam Majewski closed out the final 2.0 innings and struck out five to pick up the save.
Nichols got off to a hot start, putting up six runs in the first inning. Christian Naccari hit a three-run homer to highlight the frame, and Victor Valentin drove in a pair with a single up the middle.
Mitchell cut into the deficit with four runs in the second. An RBI single by Jakari Pellegrini plated the first run, and Sagun later followed with a bases-loaded double that knocked in three.
Nathaniel Cormier hit a two-run homer in the third inning that put the Bison on top 8-4. However, the Mariners struck back for three in the home half, as Jeremy Santos had a two-run single and Pellegrini added a sacrifice fly.
Mitchell took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. A two-run double by Jose tied the score at 9-9, and Sagun followed with an RBI single to put the Mariners in front.
Mitchell exploded for eight runs in the eighth to put the game away. Jose opened the flood gates with a three-run triple, and Dougie DelaCruz and Steve Cochrane each added two-run singles in the frame.
The Mariners finished with a season-high 17 hits in the contest.
Mitchell will next play Anna Maria College on Wednesday, March 17 at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Nichols (0-3 overall) returns to action at home against Roger Williams University on Saturday, March 27 at 11:30 a.m.
