Baseball's Diaz, Thivierge Nab NECC Honors
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Two members of the Mitchell College baseball team were recognized by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday as the league announced its weekly awards.
Senior Anthony Diaz was named NECC Player of the Week while classmate Roland Thivierge was tabbed NECC Pitcher of the Week. The duo led Mitchell to a 6-0 week that included a pair of wins over New England College and a four-game sweep of Elms College, cementing the top spot in the NECC standings.
Diaz becomes the fourth Mitchell player earn player of the week honors this season, joining Anthony Stigler (March 8) and John-John Jose (March 15) and Dougie DelaCruz (April 19). Thivierge nabbed the honor for the second time this season (March 29) and third time in his career.
Diaz batted .500 with three home runs and a team-high 16 RBI last week in his return to the lineup. He hit safely in all six games, highlighted by a 3-for-3 day with two homers (including a grand slam) and eight RBI at New England College. He also hit a home run against Elms over the weekend and finished with eight RBI in the four-game series.
Thivierge went 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in a pair of starts. He tossed a complete game and struck out a career-high 11 batters in a 5-1 victory at New England College. He then fanned nine without issuing a walk and yielded one run over 5.0 innings in a win over Elms.
Mitchell (21-6 overall, 14-2 NECC) will host the 2021 NECC Baseball Championship on May 7-9. The top-seeded Mariners open the double-elimination tournament against fourth-seeded Becker College on Friday at 9:30 a.m.
