GROTON, Conn. - Babson College leads the field of seven schools
after the first round of play at the 2009 NECC Men's Golf
Championship on Saturday at Shennecossett Golf Course.
Babson shot 294 as a team and holds a 21-stroke lead over Becker
College (315). Rounding out the team scores were Springfield
College (330), Elms College (341), Mitchell College (348), Daniel
Webster College (361) and Newbury College (404).
Babson's Bryan Eger (Marion, Mass.) sits atop the leader board
while teammates Camilo Perlaza (Cali, Colombia) and Fernando
Pineres (Cartagena, Colombia) are right behind. Eger carded the low
round of the day, recording an eagle, a birdie and 14 pars to come
in with a one-under 70. He was the only player in the field to
break par. Perlaza was two shots back at 72 while Pineres is in
third place overall at 73.
Becker got strong performances from Ben Malone (Westborough,
Mass.), Branden Parkhouse (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and David
Rixham (Sutton, Mass.). All three broke 80 and sit among the top-10
individuals. Malone's round of 75 included a pair of birdies and
has him in fourth place overall. Parkhouse (78, 6th) and Rixham
(79, t-7th) are also within striking distance of the leaders.
Rounding out the top 10 individuals were Elms' Andrew Sullivan
(West Springfield, Mass.) and David Pianki (West Suffield, Conn.) ,
Babson's Joseph Young (Westwood, Mass.) and Matt Foley (East
Longmeadow, Mass.) and Springfield's Craig DiFranco (East
Longmeadow, Mass.). Sullivan is fifth overall at 76 while Pianki
and Young are tied for seventh at 79. Foley and DiFranco are tied
for 10th at 80.
Leading the way for Mitchell was freshman Will Visel (Ivoryton,
Conn.), who shot a season-low round of 82 and is tied for 12th
overall. Junior John Pescheta (Worcester, Mass.) also had a strong
round at 85 and is 16th overall. Rounding out the scoring for the
Mariners were freshmen Michael Baker (90, 23rd), sophomore Tad
Maynard (91, 24th) and junior Matt Chatell (95, T-27th).
The 2009 NECC Championship will conclude with a final round of 18
holes on Sunday, October 11 at Shennecossett Golf Course. Tee times
begin at noon.
