Marks Named Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse, Golf Programs
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College has named Derek Marks as
head coach of the men's lacrosse and golf programs, as announced by
Director of Athletics Maureen White on Tuesday.
Marks is already familiar with Mitchell athletics, having served as
an assistant lacrosse coach with the Mariners during the 2010
season. He will make his head coaching debut with the men's golf
team in the fall before leading the lacrosse team in the
spring.
"I would like to thank Mo White and the Mitchell College family for
the opportunity to lead the Mariners men's lacrosse and golf
programs," said Marks. "Mitchell College has the perfect
combination of academics and athletics for its student-athletes.
This is an exciting time to be part of the men's lacrosse and golf
programs at Mitchell, and I look forward to building strong
programs of which our student-athletes, alumni and fans can be
proud."
A former Division I athlete in two sports, Marks brings a wealth of
experience and knowledge to the Mariners program. He played two
seasons of lacrosse at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn.,
logging time in the defensive midfield at both short and long pole.
He was also a four-year letterwinner on the football team as the
starting punter. A second team All-American and the Northeast
Conference's Top Punter in 2006, he graduated as the Pioneer's
all-time leading punter and holds school records for yards per
attempt for a season (39.8 in 2006) and career (38.4).
Marks began his collegiate football career at the University of
Connecticut and redshirted as a freshman. He was a member of the
squad that won the Motor City Bowl in 2004-05, the first bowl
victory for the Huskies.
A standout athlete at East Lyme High School, Marks earned
all-conference and all-state honors in both lacrosse and football
during his career. He played in CHSCA Lacrosse All-Star Game and
led the Vikings to a state championship in 2004. His football team
also captured a state title in 2003.
"Derek is ready to take the next step in his coaching career," said
White. "The same qualities that helped him thrive as a two-sport
Division I athlete—passion and commitment—will drive
his success on the sidelines. He's already proven to be an
aggressive recruiter, and I believe he will take our men's lacrosse
and golf programs to the next level."
Marks graduated from Sacred Heart University in 2008 with a degree
in business administration/sports management. He still plays
semipro football as a member of the Connecticut Bearcats of the New
England Football League.
