Softball Sweeps Hornets in Home Opening Doubleheader
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team had an explosive home opener on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader against Vermont State University Lyndon in non-conference action at Alumni Field.
The Mariners pounded out 11 hits in the opener en route to an 11-3 win, then kept their foot on the gas, besting the Hornets 9-1 in game two, as both games were cut short due to the eight-run rule.
The Mariners (5-3, 0-0 GNAC) return to action on Saturday, March 22, with a non-league doubleheader at Nichols College. The Hornets (0-9, 0-0 NAC) play next on Saturday, March 22, at Westfield State University.
Game 1 – Mitchell 11, VT-Lyndon 3
After a scoreless opening inning, both teams plated a pair of runs in the second. The Mariners then jumped ahead for good in the third, scoring runs on an RBI single by junior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) and a fielding error by the Hornets.
Lyndon got one run back in the top of the fourth, before a three run bottom of the frame broke the game open. The Mariners added two more runs in the fifth and six, ending the game in the sixth inning on the run rule.
DeCicco, along with Madison Cole (Westbrook, ME), Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth R.I.), and Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.) had two hits apiece for Mitchell. Whitmarsh, who tripled, drove in two runs and scored twice, as did Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.) and Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME). Landry and Clancy each doubled.
Senior Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) picked up her third win in the circle, tossing seven innings of three-run ball, striking out three.
Bailey Quire shouldered the loss after surrendering 11 runs (nine earned) in five and one third innings of work. Lindsey Gannon and Seairra Anderson each had two hits for the Hornets.
Game 2 – Mitchell 9, VT-Lyndon 1
The Hornets jumped out to an early lead in the second game of the twin bill, pushing a run across in the top of the first. After not scoring in the bottom of the frame, the Mariners broke out for three runs in the second on Kaylee Drago's first home run of the season, a three run shot to left-center.
Mitchell added one run in the third on an RBI groundout by Emma LaBreck (Rollinsford, N.H.), before run scoring singles by Brooke Whitmarsh and Brooke Clancy tacked on two more runs in the fourth. The Mariners capped the scoring in the sixth with Drago lacing an RBI single up the middle, bringing the game to close at an eight-run deficit for the Hornets.
Drago went 3-4 with a homer, four RBI and a run scored, while Whitmarsh had three hits, including a double, with one RBI and two runs scored. Olivia DeCicco and Brooke Clancy also had two hits apiece in the win.
Making her first start of the season, senior Katelynn Goodman (Virginia Beach, VA) picked up the win in the circle, scattering just two hits and a run in four innings of work, striking out two. DeCicco then came out of the bullpen and worked two scoreless to close the door.
Riley McNamara was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs in five innings. She also collected a team-high two hits.
