HARTFORD, Conn. -- Mitchell College split a baseball doubleheader against Trinity College on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at DiBenedetto Stadium.
Roland Thivierge tossed a gem in the opener as the Mariners scored eight unanswered runs to win 8-2. Jeremy Sagun went 3-for-3 with two RBI while Steve Cochrane had two hits and drove in three runs. Thivierge scattered five hits over 7.0 innings and struck out six to improve to 3-0.
The Bantams bounced back to post a 6-4 win in the nightcap. Sagun and Hunter Yaworski paced the Mariners at the plate with two hits apiece.
Mitchell (7-4 overall) will next host Rhode Island College on Wednesday, March 31 at 3 p.m.
Game 1 - Mitchell 8, Trinity 2
The Mariners put runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings but came away empty. Alex Rodriguez doubled in the fourth to put two runs on the scoreboard for Trinity.
Mitchell finally broke through in the fifth as Sagun led off with a single and Jakari Pellegrini followed with a double. Dougie DelaCruz grounded out to plate a run before Cochrane tied the game with an RBI single.
Sagun pushed Mitchell into the lead with a two-run single in the sixth. DelaCruz then walked to force in another run, and Cochrane put on the finishing touch with a two-run single to extend the margin to 7-2.
Mitchell added an insurance run in the ninth as Yaworski drew a two-out walk and scored from first base on a double by Matt Falk. The extra run wasn't needed as reliever Kenny Heon allowed only one hit while cleaning up the final 2.0 innings.
Game 2 - Trinity 6, Mitchell 4
Mitchell got out to an early 1-0 lead to start the nightcap as DelaCruz singled to score Sagun. However, the Bantams answered with a four-run second inning that was highlighted by a two-run homer by Sean Meth.
Trinity added two runs in the fourth to go up 6-2, leaving Mitchell to play catch up the rest of the game. The Mariners got a run back in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Yaworski and another in the eighth on an RBI single by Sagun, but Trinity reliever Alex Shafer sewed up the win with a six-out save.
Pellegrini made the start for the Mariners and lasted 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits while walking three. The bullpen did its best to keep the Bantams at bay, yielding two runs on four hits over a combined 6.2 innings.
