Baseball Tops Coast Guard in Home Opener
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team pounded out 14 hits in its home opener on Wednesday afternoon, coasting to a 15-0 win over crosstown rival Coast Guard Academy.
Bo Yaworski went 3-for-5 with two doubles and six RBI to lead the Mariners at the plate. Camren Varney took care of business on the mound, allowing only one hit over 6.0 scoreless innings while striking out seven and walking one.
Mitchell got on the scoreboard in the second inning on an RBI single by Matt Falk, and later in the frame a two-run double by Yaworski extended the lead to 4-0. The Mariners then added five more runs in the third, with Yaworski supplying another two-run double to cap the rally.
Varney cruised through the early innings—retiring nine straight at one point—before hitting trouble in the fourth. After an error and hit batter put two runners on with one out, Varney fanned the next two batters to escape unscathed. In the fifth, he pitched around an error and a walk to strand a pair of runners in scoring position.
The Mariners added three more runs in the home half of the fifth, with Yaworski picking up his fifth RBI on a single to right field that scored Steve Cochrane. Dougie DelaCruz also plated a run with a sacrifice fly. In the eighth, Yaworski drew a bases-loaded walk to record his sixth and final RBI of the day.
After retiring the side in order in the sixth, Varney turned the game over to the Mitchell bullpen. Kevin Vining and Chris Gibbs each pitched 1-2-3 innings in the seventh and eighth, respectively, before Derek Dascoulias took over in the ninth to close out the game.
Coast Guard finished with only two hits in the game, courtesy of John Carroll and Charles Red. Starting pitcher John Thigpen lasted 2.0 innings and yielded four runs (one earned) on five hits.
Mitchell (2-2 overall) will next head to Florida for its annual spring break trip. The Mariners open the eight-game swing with a tilt against Wittenberg University on Tuesday, March 8 at 6 p.m.
