Baseball Tops ONU at RussMatt Invitational
AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team opened play the 2022 RussMatt Invitational with a 6-3 win over Ohio Northern University on Sunday morning.
The Mariners improved to 5-4 on the season behind another quality outing from Camren Varney, who struck out a career-high 10 batters over 7.0 innings. The junior right-hander allowed only two runs—both unearned—on five hits and improved to 2-1.
After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning, the Mariners pulled even in the third on a ball put into play by Hunter Yaworski that scored Angel Galindez. An infield single by Bo Yaworski plated the go-ahead run in the fourth, and Mitchell padded the lead with a three-run seventh inning to go up 5-1. Lelo Martinez supplied the big blow with a two-run double in the frame.
Varney came out to start the eighth inning but eventually turned the ball over to the bullpen. Kenny Heon and Sam Majewski closed out the win, with the latter picking up his first save of the season.
Mitchell will play a doubleheader against Rutgers University-Camden on Monday, March 14 beginning at 10 a.m.
