Game 2
Rutgers-Camden
Game 1
Rutgers-Camden
AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team swept a doubleheader from Rutgers University-Camden on Monday at the RussMatt Invitational, winning by final scores of 5-4 and 14-5 at Lake Myrtle Park.
Matt Falk hit a home run in each game of the twin bill while Hunter Yaworski also went deep in the second game. Starting pitchers Chris Gibbs and Eddie Kaftan both picked up wins on the mound.
Mitchell (7-4 overall) will close out its Florida trip with a single game against SUNY Poly on Tuesday, March 15 at 9:00 a.m.
Game 1 – Mitchell 5, Rutgers-Camden 4
Mitchell trailed 4-1 after the second inning but slugged its way back into the game. Falk cut into the deficit with a towering two-run blast over the center-field fence in the fourth inning. One inning later, the Mariners tied the game on an RBI double by Yaworski and then pulled ahead on a sacrifice fly by Lelo Martinez.
Gibbs pitched into the sixth inning but left the game with one out and the tying run on second base. Reliever Kevin Vining retired the next two batters to escape the frame with the one-run lead intact, and Sam Majewski pitched around a leadoff walk in the seventh to nail down the save.
Gibbs, who improved to 2-0, gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits and struck out three.
Game 2 – Mitchell 14, Rutgers-Camden 5
Mitchell controlled the second game with big offensive outbursts, plating four runs in both the third and sixth innings and six runs in the fifth. The support was more than enough for Kaftan, who yielded five runs (one earned) on six hits over 5.0 innings and struck out three.
Yaworski keyed the four-run fourth inning with a two-run homer to right field, and he also supplied a two-run single in the fifth. Falk swatted his team-leading fourth homer of the season in the fifth, a three-run bomb to left field that padded Mitchell's lead to 10-1.
Rutgers got four runs back in the home half of the fifth, but the Mariners responded with a four-spot in the sixth. After Yaworski picked up his fifth RBI of the day with a bases-loaded walk, Martinez plated a run with a base hit and Falk tacked on a sacrifice fly.
