Baseball Caps Florida Trip With 18-0 Win
AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Mitchell College baseball team wrapped up its spring trip with a 18-0 victory over SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Tuesday morning at the RussMatt Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park.
Mitchell pounded out 10 hits and benefitted from 10 walks and six SUNY Poly errors. The Mariners limited the Wildcats to just one hit in the contest as pitchers Daniel Driscoll, Derek Dascoulias and Ryan Ahern combined for the shutout.
The Mariners (8-4 overall) went 4-0 at the RussMatt and outscored their opponents by a 43-12 margin. Mitchell went 6-2 in eight games in Florida and returns home on a five-game winning streak.
Mitchell put up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. A sacrifice fly from Dougie DelaCruz plated the first run, and Matt Falk was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the second.
The Mariners added seven runs in the second inning and seven more in the third to take a commanding 16-0 lead. The final two runs came in the seventh inning, giving Mitchell a season-high 18 runs on the board.
Driscoll, who improved to 2-0 on the bump, didn't allow a hit in 5.0 innings of work. He walked three while striking out seven before turning the game over to the bullpen. Dascoulias struck out three batters in the sixth, and Ahern closed out the seventh by getting a game-ending double play to wrap up the victory.
