Gibbs Strikes Out 13 as Baseball Sweeps Husson
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team won a pair of games against Husson University on Sunday afternoon, claiming the opener by a 10-2 final before prevailing 5-0 in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Mariners trailed 2-1 but responded with nine unanswered runs to claim the nine-inning affair. Lucca Ardovini-Brooker had a pair of hits and knocked in three runs to lead the charge, and starting pitcher Camren Varney went 7.0 strong innings to pick up his third win of the season.
Mitchell starter Chris Gibbs was the story of the second game, striking out a season-high 13 batters in 6.0 innings. The rookie right-hander allowed only four hits and didn't issue a walk. At the plate, Owen Robbins was a double shy of the cycle and drove in two runs.
Mitchell (10-4 overall) has won seven straight games and will next host Fisher College on Wednesday, March 23 at 3 p.m.
Game 1 – Mitchell 10, Husson 2
After an RBI double by Joshua Scott put Husson on the board in the first, Robbie DelaCruz tied the game with an infield single in the second. The Eagles then went ahead 2-1 in the fourth when Scott led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch.
Mitchell took over the lead behind a three-run fifth inning. The tying run scored when Juan Abreu was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Ardovini-Brooker followed with a single up the middle to plate two more runs and make it 4-2.
Ardovini-Brooker added an RBI single in the seventh as the Mariners extended the lead to 6-2. Mitchell then put up four runs in the eighth that included an RBI single from Abreu.
Varney allowed just two runs (one earned) on four hits and fanned six. Kevin Vining closed out the final 2.0 innings and struck out two without yielding a hit.
Cam Graham got the starting nod for Husson and allowed three runs on four hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out three and walked four in the loss.
Game 2 – Mitchell 5, Husson 0
Husson had a chance to get to Gibbs early but couldn't cash in. The Eagles loaded the bases on consecutive singles by Kobe Rogerson, Jackson Curtis and Scott with only one out. However, Gibbs buckled down and struck out the next two batters to escape the jam.
Gibbs was untouchable for most of the afternoon. He fanned at least one batter in every inning, struck out the side in both the second and fourth, and went through a stretch where he punched out 12 of 13 batters faced. He improved to 3-0 with the win.
The Mariners pushed across two runs in the second inning, the first on a triple by Robbins and the second on a sacrifice fly by Ardovini-Brooker. Robbins tacked on a solo homer in the fourth inning, his first of the season. Bo Yaworski added an RBI single in the fifth and Justin Adorno capped the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth.
Husson's Chris Naylor surrendered two runs on four hits over 2.0 innings of work in the loss. The Eagles dropped to 4-8 overall on the season.
