Baseball Takes Twin Bill vs. Fisher
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team won both games of its doubleheader against Fisher College on Wednesday, extending its winning streak to nine games by final scores of 5-3 and 19-8.
In the opener, the Mariners built a 5-0 lead after two innings and held off the Falcons down the stretch. Bo Yaworski hit a two-run homer to help fuel the offense, and starting pitcher Eddie Kaftan allowed only two runs on five hits over 5.0 innings.
Mitchell broke out the bats in the nightcap, pushing across a season-high 19 runs on 12 hits. The Fisher pitching staff also contributed to the cause, issuing seven walks and hitting seven batters in the game. Owen Robbins finished with three hits and knocked in three runs while Hunter Yaworski doubled twice and also plated three.
Mitchell (12-4 overall) will open conference play at home against New England College on Saturday, March 26 at noon.
Game 1 – Mitchell 5, Fisher 3
Mitchell pieced together a three-run first inning and never trailed. After the first run of the game scored on a Fisher fielding error, Lelo Martinez and Robbins contributed back-to-back RBI singles to extend the lead to 3-0.
In the second inning, the Mariners made it a 5-0 game on a two-run homer by Bo Yaworski. The rookie first baseman notched his first collegiate long ball with an opposite-field shot over the left-center fence.
Fisher got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the third. Jacob Diezel plated the first run with a single up the middle, and Ben Sawyer followed with a sacrifice fly to left to bring in the second.
The Falcons threatened again in the fifth, putting runners on second and third with only one out. However, Kaftan was able to work his way out of trouble with the 5-2 lead intact.
Things got dicey for the Mariners in the seventh as consecutive doubles by Elijah Perez and Deziel cut the lead to two and brought the tying run to the plate. Reliever Kevin Vining later nailed down the save, getting the final out on a ground ball to first to strand three runners.
Fisher starter Christian Dow allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and struck out three in 6.0 innings of work.
Game 2 – Mitchell 19, Fisher 8
A two-run single by Robbie DelaCruz capped a four-run first inning as the Mariners got out of the gates quickly again. The lead didn't last long, however, as the Falcons went up 5-4 in the top of the second behind a grand slam by Deziel.
Mitchell responded by sending 13 batters to the plate in the home half of the second. After tying the game on a wild pitch, the Mariners took the lead for good on a two-run double by Hunter Yaworski. Logan Casala later added a two-run single, and Angel Galindez capped the seven-run rally with an RBI single to center.
A two-run double by Robbins and a sacrifice fly by DelaCruz extended Mitchell's lead to 14-5 in the third. The Mariners added four runs in the fifth—including DelaCruz's fourth RBI of the game—and another in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Tyler Daly picked up the win in relief, allowing only one run on two hits in 2.0 innings of work. Starter Daniel Driscoll went 3.1 innings and gave up seven runs (one earned) on four hits.
Fisher used six pitchers in the contest, none longer than the 1.1-inning stint turned in by starter Angel Alicea. He yielded 10 runs (seven earned) on four hits and struck out two.
