Baseball Lets One Slip Away at Lesley
LEXINGTON, Mass. – The Mitchell College baseball team dropped a 9-8 decision to Lesley University on Saturday morning in a New England Collegiate Conference clash at Minuteman High School.
The Lynx scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk off with the win. Mitchell never trailed until a two-out single to left field by Ian Dempsey ended the game. The Mariners squandered leads of 4-0, 6-4 and 8-6 in the setback, falling to 18-7 overall and 3-2 in NECC action.
Mitchell's offense racked up 11 hits, including six that went for extra bases. Matt Falk supplied a pair of hits that included his team-leading sixth home run of the season.
It was an off day for the Mitchell pitching staff, which issued a season-high eight walks in defeat. The last time the Mariners yielded that many free bases was on opening day of the 2018 season, a span of 149 games ago.
The day started off on the right foot as the first three Mitchell batters all reached base. After Angel Galindez led off with a walk, Bo Yaworski and Dougie DelaCruz hit back-to-back doubles en route to a 3-0 lead.
In the second inning, an RBI double by Galindez scored Justin Adorno to make it 4-0. The Lynx responded with four runs in the home half, drawing three walks and getting two hits to tie the game.
The Mariners reclaimed the lead in the third on a solo homer by Falk. In the fourth, Yaworski got hung up between first and second base to allow Galindez to score from third to make it 6-4. But RBI singles by Dempsey and Adam Budorick in the bottom of the frame evened the score once more.
Mitchell put up two more runs in the fifth inning to seize control for the third time. Owen Robbins and Falk each picked up their second RBI of the game, with the former doubling to left field and the latter singling to right.
The Lynx pushed across a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Justin Dennett, and then tied the game in the seventh thanks to an RBI double by James Brandon. After a hit batter and a walk put the winning run in scoring position, Dempsey clubbed a base hit to left to give the Lynx their first NECC win of the season.
Mitchell starter Camren Varney lasted 4.0 innings and allowed six runs on six hits while striking out four. Reliever Sam Majewski was saddled with the loss, giving up two runs on two hits while walking three and fanning two.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader with Lesley was postponed due to weather. Mitchell returns to action at home against UMass Dartmouth on Thursday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m.
