Washington & Jefferson Walk Off for the Win over Baseball
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Sophomore Zac Stern singled up the middle in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday, driving in the winning run and sending Washington & Jefferson College past Mitchell College, 7-6, in a non-conference clash at the Russmatt Invitational.
Trailing by one run in the bottom of the ninth inning, Drew Garth hit an RBI single down the right field line to tie the game, 6-6. After a pinch runner stole second and advanced to third on a fly out, the game winning run crossed home when Stern ripped a base hit to centerfield, elevating the Presidents above .500, with a 3-2 record on the season.
Sophomore Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.) went 1-4 with a two-run single, a walk, and one run scored for Mitchell. Senior Chris Gibbs (New Britain, Conn.) got the start for the Mariners and went five and two third innings, surrendering five runs and nine hits, striking out seven. Junior Jacob Quiles (Wallkill, N.Y.) dropped to 0-2 after giving up two runs in one and two third innings.
Jacob LaDuca and Drew Garth each had two hits for the Presidents, while Garth, Stern, and Brian Feldman had two RBI apiece. Jake Stiehl was credited with the win after working a scoreless ninth inning out of the bullpen.
The Mariners (2-7, 0-0 GNAC) jump right back into action on Monday, March 10, when they face the University of Mount Union is a Russmatt Invitational game at 9:30 am. The Presidents (3-2, 0-0 PAC) are scheduled to play Marymount University in a doubleheader on Monday, March 10.
