McLean Finishes One Under as Men’s Golf Opens Season
GROTON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's golf team opened up the 2023 season by hosting the Mitchell Invite I on Thursday afternoon at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton, Connecticut.
Albertus Magnus College, the only other GNAC school in the field, took home the top team score, finishing with a 301. The Wentworth Institute of Technology was second with a 317, Western Connecticut State University third with a 326, and Mitchell rounded out the field, shooting a 368 as a team.
Albertus sophomore Shamar Wilson edged out Mitchell's Shamus McLean (Groton, Conn.) by one stroke to earn medalist honors, finishing the day with a two-under-par round of 69. McLean, who shot a one-under-par round of 70, was the runner up, while Ryan Vincent of WIT and Sam Witt of Albertus tied for third, each shooting four-over-par scores of 75. McLean shot a 36 on the front nine and a 34 on the back nine.
For McLean, the one-under-par round of 70 ties the best round of his Mitchell career. The score remains the second lowest round in school history and marks the third time a Mitchell golfer has finished under par. Jeff Cretella remains the holder of the lowest round in the Division III era of the program with a two-under-par round at the Mitchell Tri-Match, also held at Shennecossett, in October of 2007.
Fellow senior Jack Hayes (New Milford, Conn.) was second on the Mariners with an 83, good for a 12th place tie. Micheal Thompson (Hamden, Conn.) shot a 106, Luke Sullivan (Shelton, Conn.) a 109, and Jackson Rappel (Fairfield, Conn.) a 124 to round out the day for Mitchell.
The Mariners will return to their home course on Tuesday, September 12th, for the Mitchell Invitational II.
