Baseball Wraps Spring Break with Loss to #17 Rowan
LEESBURG, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team concluded their spring break trip with an 11-2 loss to #17 Rowan University on Saturday afternoon in a RussMatt Invitational game played at Pat Thomas Stadium.
Sophomore Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.) went 1-4 with a double for the Mariners, while sophomore Luis Callazo (Windsor, Conn.) was 1-3 with an RBI single and junior Kenneth Walker Jr. (New London, Conn.) drove in the only other Mitchell run.
The Profs opened the scoring in the top of the second, loading the bases and scoring the first run of the day on a Mitchell fielding error. Faced with a bases loaded situation and one out, senior Chris Gibbs (New Britain, Conn.) escaped the jam by inducing a pop up to the second baseman and a foul out to the catcher.
Following a pair of scoreless frames, the Mariners tied the game on an RBI single to center off the bat of sophomore Luis Collazo, plating fellow sophomore Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.), who had reached base on a single up the middle and advanced to third on a base hit by junior Adam Vartanian (Cumberland, R.I.).
Rowan countered in the sixth, scoring four runs to take a 5-1 lead, as Joey Bogart, Jason Schooley, and Chris Serrano each hit RBI singles.
The Mariners scratched across one run in the bottom of the sixth when sophomores Chase Donahue (Shirley, Mass.) and Michael Ficocelli singled and doubled in back to back at bats, before junior Kenneth Miller Jr. drove home Donahue from third on a groundout. However, the Profs got the run right back in the top of the seventh when Jason Morgan collected an RBI single, chasing Gibbs from the game. Rowan went on to add five more runs in the eighth, securing their sixth straight victory.
Gibbs dropped to 1-2 on the season, allowing six hits and six runs (five earned) across six innings of work.
Zach Coluccio held the Mitchell bats at bay, tossing eight innings of two-run ball, striking out nine for his first win of the spring. Phil Sedalis, Jason Morgan, Jason Schooley, and Chris Serrano had two RBI each in the win for Rowan.
The Mariners (3-12, 0-0 GNAC) will return north and play their next game on Tuesday, March 18, at home against Nichols College in non-conference action, with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 pm. The Profs (7-1, 0-0 NJAC) will look for their seventh consecutive victory when they face Babson College on Sunday, March 16, in Winter Haven, Florida.
