Women's Tennis Wins Second in a Row
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's tennis team won its second straight New England Collegiate Conference contest on Saturday afternoon, defeating Lesley University by a 7-2 final at the Mitchell Tennis Courts.
Mitchell junior Carly Paterson came away with a pair of victories on the day, as did Lesley sophomore Emma True. Paterson won at both top singles and doubles while True was victorious at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles.
The Mariners started off the match by taking two of the three doubles points. Paterson and senior Julie Embley earned their first win as a duo by an 8-6 final over Hannah Phalen and Jillian Clarke. The Lynx got a point back at No. 2 where True and Molly Phelps cruised to an 8-3 win. Mitchell picked up the final doubles point by virtue of a forfeit at the No. 3 spot.
Mitchell then took five of six singles points to seal the victory, winning all its matches in straight sets. Paterson needed a first-set tiebreaker to get by Phalen by scores of 7-6 (7-5), 6-0, while junior Alexa Litwak won 6-3, 6-0. Sophomores Jennifer Schmidt and Anysia Lombardo also posted victories at the No. 4 and 5 spots, respectively, while True topped Embley for Lesley's lone singles point.
Mitchell (2-3 overall, 2-1 NECC) will next play at Becker College on Wednesday, September 26 at 3:30 p.m.
