Tennis Earns NECC Win at Becker
LEICESTER, Mass. - Mitchell College defeated Becker College, 7-2, in New England Collegiate Conference women's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon.
The win lifted the Mariner's record to 2-3 overall (1-2 NECC) while the Hawks dropped to 1-8 (0-3 NECC).
In top doubles action, Laura Simmons and Samantha Ryan downed Jennifer Lord and Jacqueline Andrade, 8-6. Veyda McVey and Jenny Groman held off Livia Smith and Chenylle Mercado at the No. 2 spot, 9-8 (7-5), while Lehayla Cruz and Alexa Litwak bested Dana Mahan and Mary Nketiah, 8-4, at No. 3 to complete the doubles sweep.
In top singles action, Simmons earned her first collegiate win by finals of 6-0, 6-1 over Lord. Ryan needed a third set tiebreaker to beat Andrade (6-0, 4-6, 1-0 [7-5]) at No. 2. The Mariners also picked up wins at the No. 4 and 6 spots, as Veyda McVey powered past Mercado in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) while Lehayla Cruz topped Nketiah (6-4, 6-0).
Becker captured points at No. 3 and No. 5 singles.
Both teams return to NECC action on Saturday, September 27 at 1:00 p.m. Becker will host Lesley University while Mitchell travels to Regis College.
