Women's Tennis Sails Past Lesley
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Mitchell College topped Lesley University, 6-3, in New England College Conference women's tennis action Tuesday night at the Nicholas Athletics Center.
The Mariners improved to 2-1 overall and a perfect 2-0 in conference play while the Lynx dropped to 0-5 on the season and 0-2 in the NECC. Mitchell took two out of three points in the doubles portion of the match before taking four of six singles matches on the night.
Sophomore Lehayla Cruz and freshman Brittany Fuller teamed up to earn an 8-4 decision over Courtney Goggin and Hannah Levensailor in No. 3 doubles. The Lynx tied up the match briefly as Caroline Kiddie and Theresa Pereira blanked senior Samantha Ryan and junior Heather Schall 8-0 at first singles. Seniors Veyda McVey and Dominique Lacriox then scored an 8-7 win over Frances De Leon and Rosie Heller in second doubles to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
De Leon started with a 6-1, 6-0 win for the hosts over Schall in the number two match before Cruz put the Mariners back up by one with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Goggin in No. 5 singles. The Lynx tied it up once more as Kiddie defeated Ryan 6-2, 6-3 in the top flight, but McVey and Lacroix earned wins in No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, to give the guests the match.
Mitchell will next play host to Becker College on Saturday, September 19 at noon.
