Becker Holds Off WTennis, 7-2
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision to Becker College on Wednesday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action at the Mitchell Tennis Courts.
Becker began the day by taking all three doubles points and went on to capture four of six singles matches. Mitchell's points came courtesy of Alexa Litwak and Samantha Ryan, with each picking up their first wins of the season.
The top Becker duo of Cameron Murphy and Anna Pilip earned an 8-6 win over Mitchell's Carly Paterson and Ryan to set the tone early in doubles. The tandems of Kerry Saltvick and Shauna Buckley and Lily Woodward-Logan and Chenylle Mercado also earned victories by finals of 8-1 and 8-2, respectively.
Murphy, Buckley and Woodward-Logan all cruised to straight set wins in singles and combined to lose only two games between them. At the No. 6 spot, Mercado dropped her first set to Ariel Hallisey before bouncing back to take the second. She then won the 10-point tiebreaker the two played in lieu of a third set to earn the victory.
Both Litwak and Ryan dropped first sets but fought back to earn wins via the 10-point tiebreaker as well. Litwak downed Pilip at No. 2 by a final of 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) while Ryan bested Saltvick at No. 3 by scores of 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).
Mitchell (0-5 overall, 0-3 NECC) will next play at Regis College on Saturday, September 28 at 1 p.m.
