Women's Tennis Blanked at Lesley
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University women's tennis team completed a season sweep of Mitchell College with a 9-0 win Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols.
The Lynx, who topped the Mariners 8-1 in New London, Conn. on September 20 in their first meeting of the season, improved to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference. With the loss, Mitchell fell to 2-6 on the year and 1-5 in NECC play.
The Lynx jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage as they swept doubles play. Christyl Skelton and Victoria Bunker started the afternoon with an 8-0 victory over junior Dominique Lacroix and freshman Lehayla Cruz. Carissa Iverson and Frances De Leon teamed up to earn a 9-8 (7-3) win over juniors Jenny Groman and Veyda McVey (Wallingford, Conn.) in the No. 2 doubles flight. The No. 1 tandem of Caroline Kiddie and Carlyn Barker completed the sweep as they earned an 8-0 decision over freshman Laura Simmons and sophomore Samantha Ryan.
Skelton started off singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cruz in the No. 6 flight while Barker followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over McVey in the third singles match to seal the win for the Lynx.
After dropping the first set, Kiddie came back to defeat Simmons 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 1 match before Meghann Toomajian also made a comeback effort to take the No. 5 match 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-2. Iverson outlasted Ryan in the second flight 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (10-1) before De Leon rounded out the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Groman in the No. 4 match.
The Mariners will return to the court on Tuesday, October 7 when they host Becker College at 3 p.m.
