Tennis Falls 8-1 at Regis
WESTON, Mass. - The Mitchell College women's tennis team stumbled in New England Conference play with an 8-1 loss to Regis College on Saturday afternoon.
Regis won all three doubles matches and then took five out of the six singles matches to capture the victory. Regis improved to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in league play while Mitchell dropped to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the NECC.
Regis won five singles matches in straight sets, with Jessie Lord leading the Pride with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Laura Simmons at No. 1 singles. Emily Morgenbeuer and Melinda Mara won at the No. 4 and 6 positions by identical finals of 6-1, 6-0. Erica Murphy earned a win at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-0) over Jenny Groman.
Mitchell's lone point came at the No. 2 singles position. Sophomore Samantha Ryan rallied to earn the victory over Emily Rice. She won the first set 6-3 but lost the second by the same score. Instead of playing another set, the two played a ten-point tie-breaker to decide the match. Ryan jumped out to an early 6-0 advantage and went on to win 10-8.
Mitchell will next play at Bay Path College on Tuesday, September 30 at 3:30 p.m.
