Gibbs & Terni Earn GNAC Weekly Baseball Honors
WINTHROP, Mass. – Mitchell College junior Chris Gibbs (New Britain, Conn.) was named Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Pitcher of the Week and freshman Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.) was named GNAC Rookie of the Week for the sport of baseball, as announced by the league on Monday afternoon.
Gibbs and Terni both earned the honors for the first time this season, with statistics taken into account spanning the week of February 26th through March 3rd, as well as the Mariners three game season opening series in North Carolina against William Peace University on February 17th and 18th.
Gibbs, a junior right handed pitcher, turned in a pair of quality performances for the Mariners over the first four games of the season, posting a 2-0 record with a 1.00 ERA across nine innings of work (two starts) with wins against William Peace University and Brandeis University.
Gibbs recorded eight strikeouts, surrendered just one walk, and posted a WHIP of 1.00. He got his first start of the spring during the Mariners second game of the season on the road against William Peace, tossing four shutout innings, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out six. Gibbs then got the starting nod in Mitchell's home opener on Sunday, March 3rd, and delivered five innings of two-run ball (one earned run), allowing just one walk and recording two strikeouts. He enters the new week leading the GNAC with two wins.
Terni Jr., a freshman third baseman, has had a hot start to his collegiate career, slashing .438/.471/.750 across four games for Mitchell, who sport a 3-1 record.
Terni Jr. collected a hit in each game and has multiple hits in two of four contests. After recording one hit and driving in one run in the season opener, he turned in a 2-3 performance on the road against William Peace, scoring two runs in the second game of the season. He then delivered big for the Mariners in their home opener, finishing 3-5 with a double, a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. The first home run of his career came in the clutch, as the third baseman belted a go-ahead two run home run in the fifth inning to give Mitchell a lead in which they would not relinquish during a non-conference game against Brandeis. The freshman also started all four games at third base and did not make an error, posting a fielding percentage of 1.000.
The Mariners (3-1, 0-0 GNAC) will return to action on Wednesday, March 6th, when they host their crosstown rivals from the Coast Guard Academy in a non-conference single game slated to begin at 3:00 pm.
