Blue Jays Soar Past Baseball
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team continued their spring break trip at the Russmatt Invitational on Thursday afternoon, suffering a 12-0 setback at the hands of third-ranked Johns Hopkins University at Chain of Lakes Park.
The Blue Jays, who came in at #3 in the most recent D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25, improve to a perfect 10-0 on the season, while the Mariners drop to 2-11.
Hopkins jumped out to a quick start, scoring the first run of the game with some help from mother nature. A popup from Caleb Cyr, caught in the wind, dropped, scoring Alex Shane, proving to be the winning run. The Blue Jays continued to add insurance runs, scoring three in the third, three in the fourth, and five in the sixth, ultimately allowing the Hopkins to meet the run-rule threshold of 10 runs after seven innings.
Junior Kenneth Miller Jr. (New London, Conn.) collected the only two hits for Mitchell on the day. Fellow junior Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.) took the loss, surrendering four runs (three earned) across the opening two and two third innings.
Kieren Collins threw five innings of one-hit baseball, retiring all but two batters, improving to 4-0 on the season.
The Mariners (2-11, 0-0 GNAC) will be looking to snap their losing streak when they return to action on Friday, March 14, facing the Milwaukee School of Engineering in a Russmatt Invitational clash slated to begin at 12:15 pm. Winners of 10 straight to kick off the spring, the Blue Jays (10-0, 0-0 CC) will look to remain undefeated when they battle the University of Mount Union in Winter Haven, Florida, on Friday, March 14.
