
Ficocelli Named GNAC Baseball Rookie of the Week
WINTHROP, Mass. – Mitchell College freshman Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon.
Ficocelli earned the honor for the first time this season and becomes the second Mitchell player to be tabbed as conference Rookie of the Week this spring, joining fellow freshman Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.).
It was another strong week for Ficocelli, who started and played in all six games on the week, slashing .364/.444/.727, helping to guide the Mariners to a perfect 6-0 record, including a 3-0 mark in GNAC play. Ficocelli collected two doubles, three triples, eight RBI, five runs scored, and four walks, while only striking out once.
The catcher/first baseman reached base safely in all six games, finishing with more than one base hit in two games and more than one RBI in two games. Ficocello's numbers remained consistent in the three conference victories, as the freshman batted .333 with two doubles, one triple, six RBI, and three runs scored, highlighted by a four RBI performance in a win over Albertus Magnus College.
Entering the new week, Ficocelli sports a .355 batting average, good for second on the team (minimum 50 plate appearances), with seven doubles, three triples, 14 RBI, and 21 runs scored. His 21 runs scored is tied for second in the conference, while his three triples are tied for most in the conference, his seven doubles are third most in the conference, and his 27 hits are fifth most in the league.
Through 22 games, Ficocelli is batting .355 with 14 RBI and 21 runs scores. The freshman has added seven doubles, three triples, and 13 walks, whiling striking out just eight times,
The Mariners (16-6- 6-0 GNAC) are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, April 2nd, with a non-conference away game against Eastern Connecticut State University
