Men’s Golf Competes in GNAC Championship Opening Round
CONCORD, N.H. – The Mitchell College men's golf team competed in the opening round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship on Monday, hosted by New England College at Concord Country Club (Par 70, 6,449 Yards).
Senior Shamus McLean (Groton, Conn.) wrapped up his first round in a three-way tie for second overall after carding a seven-over-par round of 77. Timothy Carlson of New England College holds the top spot by one stroke at six-under.
With one day in the books, the Mariners find themselves in eighth place out of eight teams (+77), while the host Pilgrims own the top spot (+38). Saint Joseph's College (ME) hold second place (+46) after day one, while Emmanuel College (+57), Norwich University (+57), and Albertus Magnus College (+59) round out the top five.
Senior Jack Hayes (New Milford, Conn.) fired a 13-over par round, and was the second finisher for the Mariners. Fellow senior Liam Kane (Waterford, Conn.) was 20-over for Mitchell as their next golfer on the leaderboard, while freshmen Israel Smith (Houston, TX) and Nathan Mahoney (Stonington, Conn.) rounded out the pack at +37 and +43 respectively.
Day two of the GNAC Championship will get underway from Concord Country Club on Tuesday, October 15, at 9:00 am. Tomorrow's second round of the GNAC Golf Championship will determine which team will claim the conference crown and be named 2024 GNAC Golf Champion. The conference champion will earn the league's automatic qualifier into the 2025 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship in the spring.
