McLean Places Third Individually at GNAC Men’s Golf Championship
CONCORD, N.H. – Senior Shamus McLean (Groton, Conn.) carded a six-over-par round score of 76 on Tuesday, bringing his two-day total to 153 (+13), good for third place overall at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Golf Championship, hosted by New England College at Concord Country Club.
McLean found himself five over through 11 holes, before trimming two strokes off his total by firing a birdie on hole 12 and 13. The senior then found his score bumped back up to six over after shooting a bogey on three of the last four holes to close out the day. For his efforts, McLean earned GNAC All-Conference First Team honors after landing on the All-Conference Second Team last fall.
The host Pilgrims claimed the top team score at the two-day event for the second consecutive year with a 60-over-par score of 620, besting second place Saint Joseph's College (ME) by 26 strokes. The Pilgrims find themselves once again earning the league's automatic qualifier into the 2025 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Tournament, which will be held in the Spring. Albertus Magnus College placed third at +104, while Norwich University was four strokes behind the Falcons in fourth, and Emmanuel College rounded out the top five with a team score of +115. Elms College finished sixth at +135, Mitchell was seventh with a two-day total of 708 (+148), and Dean College brought up the rear with a combined score of +169.
Ryan Waring of New England College earned tournament medalist honors, shooting seven-over-par on Monday and two-over-par Tuesday for a +9 overall. His teammate, Timothy Carlson, was second overall one stroke behind Waring. Drew Mathieu of Saint Joseph's College (ME) came in fourth and Braden Camire of the Monks was fifth at +15 and +17 respectively.
Senior Jack Hayes (New Milford, Conn.) was the second player to finish for the Mariners, finishing 25-over-par at 165, which was good for a three-way tie in 13th place. Fellow senior Liam Kane (Waterford, Conn.) shot a combined score of 190 (+50) and was 35th overall for Mitchell, while freshmen Nathan Mahoney (Stonington, Conn.) and Israel Smith (Houston, TX) were +66 and +75 respectively.
Additionally, Liam Kane represented Mitchell on the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
