NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader against the University of Saint Joseph on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field, taking both games in convincing fashion, 8-2 in the opener and 11-1 in game two, which was shortened to seven innings due to the 10-run rule.
The Mariners got seven innings of two-run ball from senior Chris Gibbs (New Britain, Conn.) in game one, while freshman Ryan Dennis (Enfield, Conn.) went 3-4 with an inside the park home run, four RBI, and two runs scored.
Game two saw the Mariners plate eight runs in the bottom of the first, with Dennis adding another three hits, three RBI, and two runs scored. Senior Eddie Kaftan (Old Lyme, Conn.) held the Blue Jay bats in check, surrendering just five hits and one run across seven innings, striking out six.
The Mariners (18-13, 9-1) will look for their eighth straight win on Sunday, April 13, when they travel for a conference showdown against Norwich University. The Blue Jays (17-11, 6-3 GNAC) return to play on Sunday, April 13, with a non-league game against Wesleyan University.
