XC Runs at Tri-State Invitational
LINCOLN, R.I. - The Mitchell College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Tri-State Invitational on Saturday morning at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) Lincoln campus.
Bridgewater State University finished first out the six teams in the men's race while CCRI's Robert Allen took individual honors. Wheaton College topped the women's field of five, with Bridgewater State's Molly Rouillard crossing the tape in first place.
The Mitchell women's team placed fourth overall. Freshman Sheila Newcity continued her strong rookie season and finished 19th overall in a season-best time of 23:33 over the 5K race. Sophomore Bridget Burns also turned in her best time of the season at 24:14 and placed 25th while junior Katie Buchanan was right behind her at 24:19. Sophomores Breanna Poirier (24:46) and Tierney Caulfield (26:37) rounded out the scoring for the Mariners.
On the men's side, the Mariners finished fifth overall and just 10 points behind CCRI for the fourth spot. Junior Drew Castagna paced the squad with a 20th-place finish and covered the 8K course in 32:04. Freshman Spencer Daniel also turned in a good performance with a time of 32:51 to finish 22nd. Senior Zachary Hoch (33:51) and sophomores Michael Edwards (34:09) and Nick Longolucco (35:01) rounded out the top five for the Mariners.
Mitchell will next run at the Conn College Invitational on Saturday, October 13 at Harkness Memorial State Park.
