NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team suffered an 83-58 setback against Babson College on Wednesday night in the first-ever meeting of the two programs.
James Welch came off the bench to net a game-high 21 points to lead the Beavers, who improved to 5-0 overall. Starters Colin Bradanese and Andrew Kirkpatrick also finished in double digits with 17 and 13 points, respectively. Elijah Baidoo paced Mitchell with 13 points.
The Mariners hung close for the first 16 minutes of the contest and trailed 25-24 following a jumper by Hunter Baillargeon. However, Welch buried back-to-back three-pointers to spark a 12-0 Babson run to close the half. Aaron Gao and Matt Pattyson also drilled threes in the final minute as the Beavers took a 37-24 advantage into intermission.
Babson built the lead to as many as 28 in the second half, shooting 57 percent as a team while going 7-for-14 from beyond the arc. Bradanese led the attack with 13 points in the stanza. He also grabbed 11 rebounds to finish with a double-double.
Mitchell shot just 38 percent from the floor and 4-for-20 from deep. Jalen Benson filled out the stat sheet with five points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks.
Mitchell (0-2 overall) will next host Connecticut College on Sunday, March 7 at 1 p.m. Babson returns to action at home against the University of Saint Joseph on Saturday, March 6 at 1 p.m.
