Volleyball Falls to ECSU in Non-League Match
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 defeat to Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday in non-conference action at Geissler Gymnasium.
The Mariners lost by set scores of 25-21, 25-16, and 25-13.
Freshman Genna Hyde (Cypress, TX) led the Mariners with eight kills and added 10 digs. Junior libero Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) tied for the team-lead with 10 digs of her own, while sophomore Kiersten Veensta (Three Rivers, Mich.) handed out 15 assists, an average of five per set.
Freshman Emma Robinson racked up a match-high 10 kills for the Warriors, to go along with 15 digs. Brooke Praskievicz and Emerson Conigliaro added 13 digs and 10 digs respectively, while Liz Squier tallied 23 assists and Ariah Davis collected 13 assists.
The score was tied 15-15 in the opening set, before the Warriors reeled off four straight points. Mitchell followed with three consecutive points of their own on two attack errors and a service ace from Julia Lent to make it 19-18, before ECSU answered to push their lead back to two. Back to back points from the Mariners forced a 20-20 tie and another kill by Hyde put Mitchell on top by one, but the Warriors scored five straight points to take the set, the most competitive one of the afternoon.
The Mariners (3-6, 0-1 GNAC) will look to bounce back when they host Bridgewater State on Thursday, September 26, at 7:00 pm in a non-conference match. The Warriors (5-4, 0-0 LEC) return to the court on Wednesday, September 25, with a non-league showdown at Dean College.
