Coast Guard Sinks Volleyball 3-0

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's volleyball team
dropped a 3-0 decision to the Coast Guard Academy on Thursday night
at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Coast Guard (17-3 overall) won by final scores of 25-11, 25-11 and
25-18. Freshman Catherine Walker led a balanced scoring attack for
the Bears with eight kills while classmate Rachel Cuthrell and
junior Merritt Anderson added seven kills apiece. Anderson was a
perfect 7-for-7 in attempts for a hitting percentage of 1.000.
Mitchell (4-7 overall) put up a fight in the final set. The
Mariners jumped out to an 8-1 lead behind the play of junior
Jennifer Bordonaro, who served for seven straight points to build
the margin. Coast Guard slowly chipped away at the deficit and took
its first lead at 16-15 thanks to four straight service points from
freshman Berit Jean Boyle. The Bears never looked back and closed
out the match on three straight service points from Anderson.
Bordonaro finished with nine assists, four kills and three aces for
the Mariners. Senior Heather-Renae Powers and freshman Shayna Diggs
also tallied four kills apiece. Powers and sophomore Bianca Young
each recorded a pair of blocks.
Boyle led the Bears with 21 assists in two games played. Freshman
Karen Matic, who started the match and played only the first set,
finished with 13 assists.
Mitchell will next play a doubleheader on Saturday, October 17 at
Lesley University. The Mariners will face Lesley at 1:30 p.m. and
Bay Path College at 3:30 p.m. Coast Guard returns to action on
Saturday as well, hosting Mass. Maritime at 11 a.m. and Becker
College at 3 p.m.
