Coast Guard Takes Down Volleyball
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's volleyball team
dropped a 3-0 decision at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday
night in a non-conference match-up.
Coast Guard won by game scores of 25-5, 25-7, 25-7 to improve to
13-4 on the season. The Bears entered the match ranked eighth
in the New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA)
regional poll.
Kelsey DePorto led the way with 12 kills to go with a pair of aces
while Rachel Cuthrell had seven kills, five digs and three
aces to lead Coast Guard. Jessica Anderson had a
team-high 13 digs while classmate Ashley Bullard led the way with
20 assists.
Sophomore Akesia Bernard had four kills, two digs and a match-high
six blocks for Mitchell. The Mariners dropped to 3-5 overall
on the season.
Coast Guard scored 14 of the final 15 points in the first set with
Lauren Bloch and Sam Marmolejo serving six points each in that
run for a 25-5 win. In set two, DePorto served seven straight
points as the Bears scored eight straight for an 11-2 lead. The
Bears scored 13 of the final 14 points--including the final 10
point--with Cuthrell serving the final nine points.
Merritt Anderson served seven straight points giving the Bears a
10-3 in set three and Coast Guard again scored the final 10
points with Bullard serving the final nine for the win.
Marmolejo added seven digs while Merritt Anderson had six digs for
Coast Guard, which has won six of its last seven.
Mitchell returns to action with a conference doubleheader on
Saturday, October 2 at Bay Path College. The Mariners
will play Bay Path at 10 a.m. before taking on Lesley
University at 2 p.m.
