Volleyball Falls 3-0 to ECSU
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's
volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Eastern Connecticut State
University on Wednesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Eastern Connecticut State won by final scores of 25-6, 25-20 and
25-16 to even its record at 12-12 overall on the season.
ECSU's Katie Wilson led all players with 13 kills while
Samantha Slonski chipped in with seven kills and added team highs
of 17 assists and 10 digs.
Senior Stephanie McKeon led Mitchell (4-14 overall) with five kills
while junior Bianca Young and sophomore Shayna Diggs added three
apiece. Senior Jen Bordonaro finished with eight assists and a
match-high 13 digs.
The Warriors cruised to an easy win in the first set, with Wilson
delivering five kills to set the pace. Britt Carrier, who finished
with 12 assists on the night, set up Wilson on back-to-back points
to close out the set.
ECSU never trailed in the second set and jumped out to an early
lead behind three straight kills from Rachael Joy, who recorded all
five of her kills in the stanza. Mitchell got as close as 17-16
following a kill from senior Kelly Ryan, but the Warriors won the
next three points to pull away for good and take a 2-0 lead.
The Mariners started the third set by siding out to gain serve and
rallying behind sophomore Samantha Alevras-Tarbell to take the
first four points. The Warriors responded by siding out and winning
seven straight points to take the lead and never trailed again.
Wilson recorded three kills during the stretch while Gianna
Trombino added an ace from the service stripe. ECSU closed out the
match by winning five of the final six points to claim the
victory.
ECSU held a 10-1 advantage in service aces for the match and
finished with 43 kills to only 13 errors. Mitchell recorded 17
kills against 12 errors.
Mitchell will next host Elms College on Saturday, October 23 at
noon.
