NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team fell 3-1 to Eastern Connecticut State University on Thursday evening at the Yarnall Athletic Center in a non-conference matchup. The Warriors took the opening set by a score of 25-18, before the Mariners rallied for a 25-20 victory in set number two. Unfortunately for Mitchell, ECSU pulled away in the third stanza, 25-19, and cruised to a 25-8 victory in the fourth to close things out.
Mitchell was led on offense by junior Bliss Brown (Rainbow City, Ala.), who tallied a game-high 16 kills. Brown added 12 digs, also a match-high figure, while Jenna Blankenship (Virden, Ill.) was credited with 12 assists. Allison Blum (Garden Grove, Cali.) and Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) both reached double-figures in digs, as Blum recorded 13 and Lent 15.
The second set found the Mariners at their most effective, as they peeled off five consecutive points to jump ahead, 11-9. The Warriors rallied by scoring five consecutive points shortly after, but the Mariners then went on an 8-0 run, featuring a trio of kills by Bliss Brown. Ahead 22-16, ECSU managed to stay close, but the Mariners held them off, closing the set on a service error from the Warriors.
Liz Squier handed out 17 assists to pace the Warriors well-balanced attack, which included five players who registered six or more kills. Bella Johnson led the way with eight kills, while Brooke Praskievicz notched seven kills and 10 digs, and Cassie Parmelee finished with 11 digs.
The Mariners (2-4) will look to snap a four-match losing streak when they travel to Rivier University on Saturday, September 16th, and open GNAC play with a tri-match against the host Raiders and Dean College. The Warriors (5-2) return to action on Saturday, September 16, when they visit WPI.
