BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team turned in a dominant performance in a non-conference tri-match hosted by Mass. Maritime on Saturday, taking down the host Buccaneers in straight sets before dispatching of Anna Maria College 3-0 at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center.
The Mariners won by set scores of 25-11, 25-21, and 27-25 in the opening match against Mass. Maritime, before downing the AMCATS by set scores of 25-10, 25-17, and 25-22.
Freshman Genna Hyde (Cypress, TX) recorded 30 kills and 22 digs across the two matches, opening the day with a 14-kill, 10-dig double-double against Mass. Maritime, before tallying 16 kills and 12 digs in a victory over Anna Maria.
Meanwhile, senior Allison Blum (Garden Grove, Cali.) finished with 25 digs against the Buccaneers and 19 against the AMCATS, while junior Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) had 17 digs in the opening match, before following that up with 29 digs in three sets against Anna Maria. Sophomore Kiersen Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) handled her role as table setter perfectly all day, handing out 51 assists across the six sets.
The Mariners found themselves threatened in the deciding set of both matches, as Mass. Maritime held a 20-19 lead before an attack error allowed Mitchell to knot the score at 20.
Two more attack errors followed and the Mariners jumped ahead 22-20, but a Mitchell service error made it 22-21, before a bad set by the Buccaneers made it 23-21 in favor of the visitors. Three consecutive points followed for Mass. Maritime, pushing them ahead 24-23, before a kill by Allison Blum tied it up at 24-24. The home team once again refused to go quietly, setting up match point off a Mitchell attack error, but the Mariners rallied for three straight points to take the set 27-25, completing the straight set victory.
Looking to close things out in the third set against the AMCATS, the Mariners found themselves leading by just one, 18-17 after a kill by Anna Maria's Lauren Decoteau. Mitchell then ripped off fourth straight points to hop into the driver's seat, and following an Anna Maria timeout added one more to pull ahead 23-17. The AMCATS responded with four straight points, but the Mariners shut the door following a timeout, as a kill by Veenstra and a bad set by the AMCATS gave Mitchell the sweep on the day.
The Mariners (3-2, 0-0 GNAC) will look to make it three wins in a row on Thursday, September 12, when they visit Framingham State for a non-conference match at 7:00 pm.
