
Raiders Outlast Volleyball in Five Set Marathon
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team rallied from a 3-1 deficit to force a deciding fifth set on Saturday afternoon, but eventually fell to Rivier University 3-2 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
The Mariners opened the day by taking the first set by a final of 25-21. The Raiders then answered, taking the second set 25-18 and the third by a final of 25-20. With their backs against the ropes, Mitchell edged Rivier 25-20 in the fourth set, before falling in the fifth set 15-12.
Mitchell received 15 kills apiece from senior Allison Blum (Garden Grove, Cali.) and freshman Genna Hyde (Cyprus, TX). Blum added 20 digs for the Mariners, while sophomore Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) posted a double-double with 34 assists and 13 digs, and junior libero Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) recorded 33 defensive digs.
Seniors Brynn Roche and Lily Sills led the way offensively for the Raiders, notched 16 and 12 kills respectively. Sophomore libero Hannah Raab finished with 22 digs, one of three players to have double-digit digs for Rivier, while senior Ryan Hicks handed out 22 assists.
The Mariners (3-4, 0-1 GNAC) return to the court on Thursday, September 19, when they host crosstown rival Coast Guard Academy in non-conference action. The Raiders (4-5, 1-0 GNAC) play host to Keene State College in a non-league match on Wednesday, September 18.
