Lacrosse Captains Named
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College men’s lacrosse
coach Steve Jewett announced his captains for the 2010 season on
Wednesday.
Senior John Kearney, junior Christopher Vandale and sophomore Adam
Grillo have been named tri-captains and will the lead the
Mariners into the upcoming season. Junior Joseph
Rice was also named an assistant captain.
“These four players will be leaders both in the classroom and
on the rectangle,” said Jewett. “They will set an
example of dedication and commitment for this young, developing
team.”
Kearney, a midfielder, is the only four-year player on the Mitchell
roster. He has seen action in 33 career games and has been a
starter for the past three years. Last season he served as
co-captain and played in every game while finishing with one goal
and three assists for four points.
Vandale, the most experienced defender on the team, returns for his
third year with the Mariners. He will anchor a defensive unit that
remains intact from last season. Vandale played in nine games and
made seven starts in 2009 and finished with 20 ground balls.
Both Grillo and Rice will be counted on to lead a Mariners attack
that lost over 70 percent of its production due to graduation.
Grillo was an impact player as a rookie last season, netting 13
goals and adding eight assists for 21 points. Rice finished with
three goals and two assists for five points.
Mitchell opens the 2010 season today at Anna Maria College at 4
p.m.
